No matter how bright the future forecast may look, you are going to have unexpected storms. Prepare for those storms while the sun is still shining. Always keep your umbrella and rain boots handy, because you will undoubtedly get caught in the rain.
(This is a metaphor, of course. What I'm actually saying is put some money back so you're prepared for the times in your life when the fit hits the shan.)
4. Use your natural gifts and talents.
You were blessed by God with abilities unique to you.
- Protect them
- Nurture them
- Hone them
- Use them
Seriously, use them. They will take you farther in life than anything else, and will fulfill you in ways that nothing else can.
5. Don't let anyone cause you to devalue your self worth.
You will encounter people who because of their weaknesses, try to diminish your strengths. Instead of appreciating the positive things you possess, they will choose to focus on the negative.
Don't take it personal.
Realize that these people are simply held captive by their own insecurities. They can't acknowledge your value, because they don't realize their own. Pray for them as you walk away with your head held high.
After all, you may not be perfect, but you're pretty darn awesome!
6. Choose your battles wisely.
"Mama said there'd be days like this..." There will be days when you want to throat punch certain individuals, while screaming out every bad word your mama told you never to say!
Trust me on this one.
Before you go all Ninja on someone, take a deep breath and ask yourself the following questions:
- If I win this fight, will it truly benefit anyone or just give me the satisfaction of winning?
- Is this cause really important to me? If so, why?
- Will the outcome of this affect the quality of my life or someone I love?
- Will this even matter a month from now? A week from now? Tomorrow?
- Would my energy be better spent on a bigger issue?
If your answers were primarily no, you should probably tuck your hands in your pockets, bite your tongue, and walk away. If your answers were primarily yes, then by all means stand your ground (maybe without the throat punching and obscene words).
7. Enjoy the ride!
Last, but most importantly, enjoy the ride.
You will screw up. You will get hurt. You will hurt others. You will be disappointed. You will want to give up.
BUT...don't waste your precious time crying about what went wrong. Cry it out and then suck it up!
You will succeed. You will be loved. You will love others. You will be happy. You will keep going.
So love like there's no tomorrow. Give like you have it all. Laugh like you're a kid. Be generous with your hugs and smiles. Savor every bite.
You only get one turn on this ride, so make sure you pay attention to the scenery!
